WHAT IS EXACTLY SDG 12?

 

SDG 12, Responsible Consumption and Production is about ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns which is the key to sustain the livelihoods of current and future generations. Humanity tends to consume things without regard for consequences or global fairness. And this, in turn, puts a massive set of blinkers over countries and creates some jarring contrasts. With the establishment of SDG 12, the goal aims to encourage nations and individuals to do more with less and minimize waste as well as focusing on the areas where action is needed to promote sustainable practices.

Within SDG 12, recycling plays a crucial role as the specific target related to recycling is outlined in Target 12.5, which states "By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse." Thus, the selection of this SDG indeed needs to be highlighted in our program stems from the fact that it emphasizes the importance of recycling as a key strategy for waste management. In this way, our program can manage to help in conserve the resources, reduce environmental impacts, and decrease the need for extracting new raw materials.

In addition, Target 12.8 mentions that “By 2030, ensure that people everywhere have the relevant information and awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature.” This target link with our program since the activity involves helps in contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future. Moreover, since this target acknowledge that awareness and information are crucial components for achieving the various SDGs, it allies with the main objective of the program in which to raise the awareness and educate the students regarding waste generation.
